Wicked R&R
065fq0b7ac047ae047b2017b3047ad018po

The basic concept of the deck is to use  :lifeRejuvenation to lobotomize  :fireWicked Shield, which gives you a solid 4-point shield (and 5 healing) for five quanta.

It's a good exemplar of the quintessential problems of "some assembly required" decks:
  • Contains "dependencies" between cards. This hurts mulligans, and makes recovery from blowouts much harder.
  • Vulnerable to "2 for 1" removal (a single  :darknessSteal is usually curtains)
  • Drawing redundant pieces after the thing has been "assembled" is often useless.
  • The above is a bigger problem than it looks, since you need to run many copies to get the "pieces" reliably, so there isn't really a good way of ensuring that you have a card early without also ensuring that you'll draw extras later.)

I'd guess this has been talked about before, but I haven't found the discussion if so.

Spoiler for Scorpion Claws version:
065fq025fh0c7ac047b2067b3027dm018po

This was the original list, and the idea was to give :lifeRejuvenation some versatility with  :lifeScorpion Claws, and to then "fix" the fact that you can only have one weapon at a time with  :fireLifesmith.

This doesn't really make sense. The first reason would be that the deck needs damage, not healing, and this provides healing, not damage. The other reason is that the deck doesn't really have the draw power to be assembling multiple things.

Spoiler for Firebrand Synergy:
:lifeRejuvenation also "breaks"  :fireFire Brand in a similar way, but this seems to be strictly worse than just playing creatures to deal the damage; it requires two cards, and like the shield synergy, the cards are mutually dependent. Plus, to have multiple at the same time, you need  :chromaFlying Weapon, which makes it even more inconsistent and card-intensive.

:fireFirebrand and  :fireWicked Shield have an interesting similarity in that you can limp along for a while by playing redundant copies if you don't draw a  :lifeRejuvenation.

Off-topic / Re: Topic for flexing double rank: 1

I had never made an arena deck before, and after a few days of cards that I couldn't make a satisfying deck for, I lucked into Fire Bolt being my card of the day.

Spoiler for Decklists:
A1:  32 - 3
055f4065f0045f1055f3065f7055f6045f2018po

(Should've diversified between pillars and pendula, but I really doubt that's decided any games.)

A2: 121 - 1
057dk025f7045f2067dg047dh057dm057dj047dn018po

(I wish I could see a replay of the time this deck lost, and I also wish I knew which deck out there has an even better rank right now.)
(Didn't have a playset of upped Fahrenheits yet, and I'm worried that I'll lose my record if I modify the deck.)

Spoiler for Deckbuilding comments:
I sacrificed draw power for mark power. It's been a while since I made the deck, so I don't remember exactly why I did that (beyond contrarianism, anyway), but I do remember building around Fahrenheit, and since you can only have one in play at a time, drawing more copies of it does no good.

That happens to work out well for this deck anyway, since its cards are all pretty much independent of each other, and are quanta-intensive to begin with. And that independence includes the pillar/towers; because of the high mark, almost everything is playable on the first second turn (a downside of Mark dependence is not getting mana on the first turn.) (Though in Arena 1, that should make no difference, since pillars don't produce that turn either.)

Still learning the ropes of EtG strategy, but it seems to have at least the following going for it:
  • Has CC and PC (Fire Bolt, Deflagration)
  • Requires CC and PC (creatures, Fahrenheit)
  • Deals "evasive" damage (Fire bolt) in addition to overwhelming normal damage (everything else)
  • Builds damage over time (Fire Spirit) (I think it should outpace GeoDiss if the number of resonators and Fire Spirits is equal.)
  • Has no dependent cards (cards that are useless by themselves, e.g. Flying Weapon)
  • Removing any single thing is generally not enough to slow it down. There's no "engine" to throw a wrench in, really.

Forgot to screenshot the end-board, but it was the same basic strategy as last time (Appreciation + Aflatoxin), but with some amendments:

It's interesting to me that Niharia and I have gone in polar opposite directions in terms of manabases. He's getting the 5% for Pillarless, and I pillarmaxxed because I didn't think Pillarless was even realistic. I think the highest theoretical score would be pillarless, but it seems much, much harder to max out Size Matters and Unupped without using pillars.

At the moment, I think my pillar strat is what's giving me the edge, but with how multiplication works, Pillarless and Toxic together might be better than pillars and Toxic even if the Pillarless player doesn't play 60 unupped cards.

It's still very much anyone's game, I think. Toxic is still a big wildcard, and Niharia's score is close enough that I think he might even beat my score without it. (By unupping cards and expanding his list.)

Spoiler for Strategy comments[/spoiler:
@Niharia It's funny you mention using Aflatoxin to get Creatureless: I was running Beguiles to steal the Malignant cells xD! Your assumption was a much better idea, and made the deck a lot more consistent.

I misunderstood the Groundskeeper bonus to mean distinct stacks, so I ran some pendulums and four-element pillars to have more permanents. Also cut my copies of Nova for the same reason.

I added a few copies of Arsenic to try for Toxic, but as mentioned earlier, I missed it. If my math is right, Toxic would get this deck to about 130.

Getting Toxic is surprisingly hard. Without losing Creatureless, you seem to be stuck with using weapons (Arsenic, Envenom) for poison, since poison spells are extremely slot-intensive if you're trying to reach 18 poison counters. (Even if the Aflatoxins do double duty.) I feel like there's got to be a better way than using weapons, but I haven't found it. (Corpse explosion might work, but not sure. Need to do some testing.)

But getting 18 poison counters through weapons means keeping the Commoner alive for a long time with shields that don't fully protect them, since you need to be able to "get in" with the weapon. But doing so can also "let in" Eternities that you're using to stall (if your strategy resembles Niharia's an mine), and those Eternities get to be a big liability fast. Plus, if you're gifting the opponent a shield (as we both are), needing to get in with poison limits your options.

On the bright side, winning "incorrectly" through damage at least allows you to try again, but achieving Toxic makes the stall much less stable and consistent.

(It occurs to me now that maybe the "trick" for achieving Toxic is to use Antimatter or Momentum on the poison weapon instead of complicating the stall.)

Smoked by Niharia, but I'm pretty satisfied with this.

Spoiler for "End Board":

His board is empty because I cast Thunderstorm to clear it, but it was all Malignant Cells before that. I also Gifted him an Empathic Bond to buy enough time for the deckout to work.

I didn't know the game had a maximum life, so my original idea was to use the new Appreciation shield, fill the opponent's board with Malignant Cells, then just stall and gain infinite life. But life points are capped at 500, so that idea wouldn't work...

Except that's exactly what I ended up doing, and it turns out that that's probably the best way to a high score anyway, at least against Commoner and without Streaks (I've ended up sort of playing my own mini-challenge lol.)

I challenge anyone to beat this percentage on Commoner with no Streak.

(Streak is kind of an annoying element of this challenge because you can just grind up Streak with a different deck between each attempt. Might try grinding streak and going for it again later, but I've already spent way too much time playing EtG today lol.) (Then again, that becomes a complete non-issue as soon as you're not trying to max out Commoner... So I guess it's kind of a self-imposed problem lol.

Met deckbuilding restriction in first round (No pillars. I did change the deck to run pillars later, but in the first round, it had none.)

New Card Suggestions / A 13th element - Time
« on: November 15, 2023, 08:00:26 pm »
This isn't really a card suggestion, and it's kind of a half-baked idea in general, but I thought I'd share it while it's still in the oven.

Elements, whether on accident or purpose, has no "turn mixing": Players do not make decisions on other players' turns. This means that it would be possible to have a set amount of time a la Chess clocks.

But unlike Chess, EtG cards could reference and change that clock time, turning it into another fundamental resource like Quanta or Life.

For example, a "Time Dragon" that deals big damage for small Quanta, but costs 5 minutes of clock time. (That's probably not very balanced, but hopefully it communicates the broad concept well enough.)

The thread title is because adding this mechanic would require the Time element to be renamed or to change radically for it to make any flavor sense. That said, it would probably be best to spread changes across the elements, and I think it might help to make some of them more distinct. Just off the top of my head:
  • Spending clock time to get damage out faster would make Fire feel a lot like Red in Magic, but actually moreso.
  • Light could have cards that restore clock time
  • Dark (but not Death) could have a new "Temporotoxin" whose poison counters consume your clock time instead of your life. (Represented like  :death :darkness in the same way that Neurotoxin is  :death :time .)
  • Water's Purity counters could be used to fix Temporotoxin counters.
  • Or maybe Purity counters can be "Temporotoxic", and add clocktime instead of subtracting it.
  • Maybe instead of things costing X clock time, they'd usually add X Temporotoxin counters, so if a deck can't capitalize on its early advantage, it's more vulnerable to a clockout.
  • Interestingly, converting normal poison to Temporotoxin could be a cheeky, situational way to dodge the damage.
  • Maybe some new mana spells could cost clocktime or something. (Though Singularity already does the job of balancing Nova in a more interesting way.)
  • With three fundamental resources instead of two, it would be a new way to divide the twelve elements, though I'm not sure if it makes sense to have four "Quanta" elements, four "Damage" elements, and four "Clocktime" elements.

Thoughts?
