Team Card Design: New Weapons
Teams of 3-7 will work together to propose 12 new weapons, one for each element.
Card design guidelines:
- Before ideas start flying left and right, get organized. Discuss roles, communication, how to assign roles. Remember this isn’t a solo card design task; be open to working with others from the first step. See team guidelines below. Research before design. An architect does a site analysis before ‘designing’. Card designers should do the same. Analyze the openEtG site: What exists already? What current cards are very strong and why? Which ones are niche or less effective? What was proposed before?

--Serprex’s interview (https://etg.dek.im/forum/index.php?topic=1455.0): answers to card design questions - Not all weapons need to be ‘new'; you may rework others' ideas, including ideas from non-weapon card proposals.
- Define your goals, the problems you’re trying to solve
- Although a rubric is not required or provided, the team may consider creating one to guide their discourse
Team guidelines:
Naturally, there may be a variance in interest, knowledge, effort, and availability. Be forthcoming about your time/interest. If you want a designated leader or captain, designate one. Break down roles/tasks if you wish (i.e. I’ll research page X-Y and summarize ideas by element)

I would like to join the New Weapons event please.
-
I'll join too.
This is how I envision our team could work:
STEP 1 (first week) we gather the ingredients.
We start with a free-for-all, with no set goal or direction. In no particular order, and with no assigned role:
- We share cool ideas we found, either on our own or from digging into past threads.
- We share our wishes, as well as any idea that we don't know how to turn into a card yet.
Example: "let's have a weapon with 100 starting strength!" "let's have a weapon that can cast Chaos Seed!" "I'm tired of losing to CC spam, let's make a card that's strong against that!" "Look at all the cool ideas I found on page 27!", etc.
STEP 2 (throughout the holidays) we cook.
We turn the chaos from the first step into twelve well thought-out weapon proposals.
- We fuse redundant ideas.
- We mix and match incomplete ideas.
- We eliminate ideas that weren't that good after all, or that wouldn't work, and so on.
Example: "maybe we shouldn't do a 100Str weapon after all" "the CS idea would work nicely with the toothpick card that was suggested", etc.
STEP 3 (final week, or whatever is left of it) we season.
We put the finishing touches into our proposals.
- We nitpick about the numbers (costs, strength|hp, etc.)
- We swap elements around to make sure we don't break game balance.
- And so on.
Flavour stuff (art, card names... ) is always welcome. Regarding communication channels, anything's fine as long as we can all use it.
-
I want to sign in for the team. to see what we come up with together, we will beat this hurdle!
-
Are you looking for 12 different teams, each of whom will create one weapon?
Or are you looking for (n < 12) teams, where each team will create 12 weapons?
-

however many teams, each team submits 12 weapons for each element. preferably designers join only 1 team.

12 weapons for each element? That's a lot of card designs! :P
-
I'll join. My personal goal will be to come up with weapons that seem fine on paper but would never see the light of day

For a few months now, the weapons forge at the heart of the fire realms had been active. Day and night, the loud bangs of metal on metal were only interrupted by horrible screams.
Then all the noises stopped. To the locals, this sudden silence — while very welcome — was incredibly jarring and eerie.
Curious, worried, and sensing something big was about to happen, the locals gathered in front of the forge. They did not have to wait long before Ferro Golem, Lifesmith and Ironclad Blacksmith came out of the forge. The three of them together are carrying a very large wooden chest, taller than any of them and much wider than it is tall.
After carefully putting the chest down on the ground, they take a second to breathe. Then Ferro Golem starts yelling.
Ferro Golem — "Hear ye, hear ye! Gather around and bring your friends! We three have a big announcement to make! We — Ironclad Blacksmith, Lifesmith and myself — have worked day and night for months, spending all of our sweat and blood, to present you… these! These twelve new weapons of exceptional craftmanship!"
The golem points at the chest. A murmur emerges from among the crowd.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "We hope our works bring you satisfaction."
Lifesmith — "Stay until the end, there's some really cool stuff in there!"
Ferro Golem — "And we are going to show you these weapons right here, right now. Starting with… this one!"
Ferro Golem opened the chest and dug out a wand from it.
Ferro Golem — "This is a Magic Wand! You can do magic with it! I think?"

NOTES:
- Will only attempt to spend quanta you can spend. E.g. if you only have one or zero light quantum, won't attempt to spend two light quanta.
- If you cannot pay either of the three costs, does nothing.
- The possible outcomes are:
- - Bouquet: 0|20 Life token with always-on gravity pull (same ability as Armaggio, but passive) and "This card's controller gains life equal to the damage inflicted to this card".
- - Rabbit: 3|3 Light token with the same abilities as the original creature.
- - Bird: airborne Air token with the same stats as the original creature, or is 2|2 if not applicable. It has ":air:: Dive."
- The non-upgraded version stores every creature it transforms, in whatever state it was at the time. Then when you target a new creature, it rolls for each stored creature, one after the other, to see if that creature gets to come out.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Oh, this is the wand I got at the booster pack shop. Buy ten get a free wand." (not an actual in-game promotion)
Ferro Golem — "Wait, really? So… does it actually do anything?"
Lifesmith — "Hey, hey, can I try it?"
Ferro Golem — "Eh, I guess its safe."
Ferro Golem handed Lifesmith the wand, which the smith promptly proceeded to wave around wildly. That seemed to do the trick, as Ferro Golem disappeared in a puff of smoke. The smoke dissipated shortly after, revealing a very confused rabbit where the golem was.
Lifesmith — "Oooh, what a cute rabbit! But where is Ferro?"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Ah, I figured something like this would happen. Lifey, can you show the next weapon? Meanwhile I will bring Ferro back. I am taking the wand and this rabbit with me."
Lifesmith — "Sure thing Clady. Hey, why don't we call the rabbit 'Fluffy'?"
The blacksmith did not answer, as it was already back into the forge.
Lifesmith — "Eh, no stress, we can figure it out later. Anyway, what weapon should I show you guys… Haha! This one's really cool!"
Like Ferro Golem before, Lifesmith dug onto the chest and took out not a wand this time, but what seemed like an axe made of bone.
Lifesmith — "Look at this amazing Skeleton Axe! Have you ever seen anything this cool? To tell you the truth, I made it myself with some bones I found lying around. But don't tell that to the other two!"
NOTES:
- The Bone Golem created by the upgraded version is a nocturnal golem that counts as a skeleton. Its default stats (when not defined by the axe's skill) are 1|1 unupped and 2|2 upped.
Ferro Golem - "Dell us what, lifey?"
Ferro Golem and Ironclad Blacksmith had just come back, but now for some reason the golem had an extra hand for a nose.
Ferro Golem — "Oh, zo you showed zat agz? Great zinging, Lifey!"
Lifesmith — "Ferro, you are back! What happened to your face!?"
Ferro Golem — "Oh, zat? Id iz zdrange, but I zink I gan get uzed do id. An egzdra hand gould gome in handy, ha ha ha!"
Lifesmith — "Uh… "
Ferro Golem — "Now, do ze negzt weapon. How about dis one?"
Ferro Golem took out a scepter from the chest and brandished it with the face-hand.
Ferro Golem — "Ze Zeptder of Ruling!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Hold on Ferro, you should let me handle this one. We can barely understand what you say. I already called Surgeon, leave the weapons to us until we can get you fixed up."
Ferro Golem — "Oh. Zorry Glady, you are righd. I leabe id up do you zen."
A saddened golem handed the scepter over the blacksmith.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "This is the Scepter of Ruling. Like its name implies, it rules."
Lifesmith — "Oh, nice pun Clady!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Nice what? Oh, right, sorry. I meant to say 'it rules over creatures'. At one point we considered giving it as a gift to Her Majesty Nymph Queen."
Lifesmith — "Isn't it so cool that it can be used by anyone? Now that rules!"
Ironclad Blacksmith sighed.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Hey Lifey, why don't you show the next weapon while we wait for Surgeon to arrive?"
Lifesmith — "Will do! Hmm, but there's this giant hammer in the way…"
Ferro Golem — "Oh, led me help wiz dat. Diz iz my proudezd greation."
Ironclad Blacksmith — "I will help as well."
All three artisans heaved together a huge hammer out of the chest, that looked it could barely fit in its container.
Lifesmith — "It's a giant hammer!"
Ferro Golem — "No, id iz a Great Maul!"

NOTES:
- "Opposite weapon or creature" means the card in the opposite slot, like with Brawl.
- Does not take damage from attackers it blocks.
- Skill has two different modes:
- - While you control a shield, it bounces it back to your hand. If there is no room left in your hand, the shield returns to the top of your deck instead. The shield keeps its changes, like when Fenghuang "saves" a creature, so no spamming infinite Phase Shields.
- - While you do not control a shield, it lets you discard and pay for an equipment in your hand. If you cannot pay, the skill does nothing (you do NOT get the discarded equipment back). If you do pay, the maul attacks and only that specific attack gets momentum. The momentum does not carry over to the normal end-of-turn attack, or to extra attacks obtained by other means.
Ferro Golem — "Look ad diz! Id iz zo dall you gan hide behind id!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Hold on Ferro, you should be careful with that."
Not heeding the blacksmith's warning, the golem stood behind the huge hammer with a no less huge grin. Then the hammer fell down on the golem's foot.
Ferro Golem — "OW! OW OW OW OW OW!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "I told you."
Lifesmith — "Woah! Are you okay Ferro?"
Ferro Golem — "Am nod! I dink my food iz broken!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Oh no. We need something to use as a splint."
Lifesmith — "Ahah! I have just the thing! Give me a second!"
Lifesmith once again searches the chest, this time pulling out a half-rotten piece of wood.
Ferro Golem — "Whad iz diz piece of shid?"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Lifey, are you serious? You want to use this as a splint?"
Lifesmith — "Trust me you two! This, as you say, is a very sturdy Infested Log I found the other day."

NOTES:
- The following creatures will be given the "bug" trait: Chromatic Butterfly, Spider Cow, Deathstalker, Flesh Recluse, Antlion, Graboid, Shrieker, Scorpion, Giant Recluse, Ash Eater, Diving Bell Spider, Bobbit Worm, Null Mantis, Dragonfly, Firefly, Firefly Queen, Scarab, Dune Scorpion, Pest, Bloodsucker, Phase Recluse (and of course all of their upgraded versions).
- Similarly to "aquatic" or "nocturnal", the "bug" trait does nothing on its own.
- Effects of the non-upgraded version:
- - If you control 2 bugs or less, nothing happens besides destroying the log.
- - If you control between 3 and 6 bugs and you have another log in your deck, you draw it and it gains 2|2. If you don't have another log to draw, nothing happens (besides destroying the log).
- - If you control between 7 and 11 bugs, one copy each of two random bugs you control are added to your hand.
- - If you control 12 bugs or more, you get the previous effect AND the next three bugs you play from your hand this turn are free.
- Effects of the upgraded version:
- - If you control 2 bugs or less, it is 2|2 and does nothing.
- - If you control between 3 and 6 bugs, it is 5|5 and gains "Poison opponent when you play a poisonous bug."
- - If you control between 7 and 11 bugs, it is 7|7, keeps the previous ability, and gains "Draw a bug if able the first time you play a bug each turn."
- - If you control 12 bugs or more, it is still 7|7, keeps the previous two abilities, and gains the Parthenogenesis skill (:life::life:: Copy target bug, counts as playing it.)
Ferro Golem — "Ged dad ding away from me!"
Lifesmith — "Woah! Hey, careful!"
Right as Ferro Golem grabbed the log to push it away, an angry scorpion came out from it and stung the golem.
Ferro Golem — "OW! ID SDUNG ME!"
Lifesmith — "Serves you right! You should be more careful with animals!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Looks like today is not your day, Ferro. Hang on, Surgeon should be here shortly. Try not to die of poisoning before then."
Surgeon — "Looks like I arrived at just the right time."
Surgeon had, indeed, just arrived.
Ferro Golem — "My zaviour!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Thank you for coming so fast Surgeon. Can you help Ferro?"
Surgeon — "Of course I can. I figured out the gist of the situation already. Give us some space, I will operate right here."
Ferro Golem — "Zank you Zurgeon. Glady, gan you show the negzd weapon? Agdually, don'd led Smidy near ze chezd anymore."
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Will do."
Lifesmith — "You two do whatever you want, I'm sulking."
Ironclad Blacksmith — "So the next weapon is going to be… OUCH!"
Ferro Golem — "Whad'z dad!? Anoder zgorpion?"
Surgeon — "Hush, don't move and don't speak."
Lifesmith — "No way that's another scorpion, all five should be in the log."
Ferro Golem — "FIBE!? AND YOU WANDED DO UZE DAD AZ A ZPLIND!?"
Surgeon — "I said HUSH!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "No, it's not a scorpion, I burned my hand on that: the Sun Blade."

NOTES:
- Sorry about the bad upped quality. You can find the card text in the next post.
- A Mirage is a 2|8 token with "Whenever this card's controller self-targets or targets a non-Mirage card they control, change the target to this creature if able."
- If you have several Sun Blades, they all trigger separately. I.e. you can drain or mill multiple times at once.
Lifesmith — "What is it? It looks so cool!"
Ferro Golem — "So you aren't sulking anymore? That didn't last long."
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Ferro, you are back to normal. That was quick."
The golem was indeed back to normal. No more poison, no more broken foot, and no more hand instead of a nose.
Ferro Golem — "All thanks to Surgeon. Again, thanks a lot!"
Surgeon — "You are welcome. I will stay around in case you guys need me again."
Ferro Golem — "Much obliged!"
Lifesmith, looking at the ground in embarrassment, stepped closer to the golem.
Lifesmith — "Look, Ferro, I'm sorry. I was wrong to get angry at you, I should have warned you about the scorpions. It's not your fault that you got stung."
Ferro Golem — "You, you should have… no, you know what? I was wrong to get angry too. I was in pain and not thinking straight. You were trying to help me in your own way and I rejected your kindness."
Ironclad Blacksmith — "So touching. Why don't you two have a reconciliation hug while you are at it?"
Lifesmith — "That's a great idea! Let's?"
Ferro Golem — "Let's!"
And so they hugged. But not for long, as the surrounding crowd was growing impatient.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Let us get back to the show. How about I show the next weapon as well? And it shall be… this one."
The blacksmith pulled a bunch of rope from the chest.
Lifesmith — "What is it? What is it?"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "It is the very Fishing Net I used to catch all the Salamanders that we ate these last few months."
Ferro Golem — "All the Salamanders? You mean that is the reason why we got to eat Salamander stew every single day?"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Correct."
Ferro Golem — "Salamander stew for breakfast, Salamander stew for lunch, Salamander stew for dinner, I am so sick of Salamander stew."
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Look, at least we got to eat something. And we decided early not to let Lifey cook."
Lifesmith — "Hey, if you guys don't want to try my Malignant Cell tartar with sautéed Fungus, it's your loss. At least I'm not a picky eater, I enjoyed the Salamander stews."
Ferro Golem — "Yes Lifey, that is exactly the problem. You should be a pickier eater. But we digress again. I will show the next weapon, it hasn't been my turn in a while."
Lifesmith — "Sure Ferro, go for it!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "No objection from me."
Ferro Golem — "Here I go then! Next weapon is going to be… oh, there's another one of my favourites. Tada!"
Ferro Golem pulled out a long smooth stick from the chest.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Oh. It's a stick. Would have been convenient when we needed a splint."
Ferro Golem — "It's not just any stick! It's a Bo Staff!"
NOTE:
- Sorry about the bad quality. You can find the card text in the next post.
Lifesmith — "So Ferro, you called my cool log a 'piece of shid', but you get all excited over a regular stick without even a tiny spider in it? For shame Ferro, for shame!"
Ferro Golem — "Again, it' s not just a regular stick, it's a… "
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Stop it you two. You already made peace. Remember the reconciliation hug?"
Lifesmith — "You are right Clady. Sorry Ferro."
Ferro Golem — "It's all good. I know: why don't you show the next weapon, Lifey?"
Lifesmith — "Can I? Okay then, I know there's still some cool stuff in there. Like these!"
Lifesmith took a bunch of feathers out of the chest.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Feathers?"
Ferro Golem — "These feathers do look nice, but aren't they just feathers Lifey?"
Lifesmith — "Not at all! These are feathers I risked my life getting from a very angry Gryphon! They are… Fierce Feathers!"
NOTE:
- For the evade reduction effect, e.g. Dusk Mantle would go from 50% to 30% evade.
Ferro Golem — "These are still just feathers. But they do look nice."
Lifesmith — "I'll take that as a compliment, thanks!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Anyway, my turn now. Not many weapons left, let's see… what is this?"
Ironclad Blacksmith pulled from the chest an amulet made from amber.
Ferro Golem — "Oooh, that looks really nice too!"
Lifesmith — "Hey, it's the amber I found! I made into an Amber Amulet!"
NOTES:
- The strength-halving effect is permanent and works the same way as Clockwork Golem's passive.
- The attack absorption effect works the same way as Brawl, only your creature does not fight back.
Ferro Golem — "You know Lifey, I don't always agree with your… tastes, but this one really is a great find. Good job!"
Lifesmith — "Thanks!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "It does look like it could sell for a lot… "
Lifesmith — "Woah! No! We are not selling it Clady!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Come on, we could be rich."
Lifesmith — "That's still a no! Stop looking at it with those eyes!"
Ferro Golem — "Okay, okay, stop it, we don't need another fight. Let's quickly move on to the next weapon. Hm? I don't remember putting this one in there. Does it ring you guys a bell?"
This time, Ferro Golem pulled an antique sword from the chest.
Lifesmith — "Nope, not one of mine either. Looks like this matches Clady's tastes? Clady is it yours?"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "I wish, it does suit my tastes. But no, I have never seen this sword before."
Ferro Golem — "So then… what was it doing in the chest?"
As the three pondered the mystery, the sword suddenly escaped Ferro Golem's hand and started moving on its own — as though held by another, invisible hand.
Ferro Golem — "Woah there! Lifey, is this your doing?"
Lifesmith — "Not at all, I swear!"
Ghost — "OoOoOoOh!"
A ghost had appeared, holding the sword and slicing the air with it.
Ferro Golem, Lifesmith, Ironclad Blacksmith — "AAAAAH! It's a ghost!"
Ferro Golem — "This must be a Possessed Sword!"
NOTE:
- The Ghost is a nocturnal golem token with "Haunts the card that created it (changes to one also apply to the other, when one leaves play sacrifice the other.)" It is 1|1 unupped, 2|2 upped.
- If the Ghost is created by another card than the possessed sword, it haunts that card instead (for example, the new fishing net card.)
Lifesmith — "Let's get out of here!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "Calm down you two, there must be a rational explanation to this!"
Lifesmith — "Yeah, right! Look at you, you are as much in a panic as we are!"
Ferro Golem — "There's only one weapon left! Let's show it off and then let's bail!"
Ironclad Blacksmith — "You go for it, I will stay a rational distance away."
Lifesmith — "Y… yeah, we believe in you Ferro!"
Ferro Golem — "Gee, thanks. If I die, I'm haunting you guys."
Shaking like a leaf, Ferro Golem took the final weapon out of the chest. Meanwhile the ghost was still slicing the air, showing no interest in the scaredy trio.
Ferro Golem — "I am alive! I think? And that folks is the final weapon! I don't even know what it is! Well, see you!"
And the golem ran away.
Ironclad Blacksmith — "I know what this is. I got it as a gift for subscribing to Precognition Magazine. It said on the box it is a Cyberweapon from the future. Anyway, wait for me Ferro!"
NOTE:
- Can target any card in play or in a hand.
And the blacksmith also ran away.
Lifesmith — "Don't leave me alone you two"
And Lifesmith ran away as well.
All three crafters had ran away, leaving behind them a befuddled and angry crowd. For about three and a half months they had had no rest from the loud noises those three were making, yet at the end all they had to show for it was a bunch of stuff they found or got for free, and maybe a couple actual low-quality weapons? And then they had the nerve to just run away?
A voice emerged from the discontent crowd: "After them!". The voice was soon echoed: "After them! After them!". The entire group started moving as one. "Lets test their weapons on them!", someone yelled, with the rest approving.
And so the angry crowd, armed to the teeth with dubious weapons, started running.
THE END (for now)
-
There it finally is. We (meaning asdw152, Hitei, pimpollo and myself, with some participation from serprex) started working on these new cards at the tail end of January.
We are not done, though. Now comes the tough part: testing. The cards will be available (soon? eventually? ask serprex) on testetg.dek.im for you to play with them. The cards will be rebalanced based on test feedback and, more importantly, only the cards that prove their worth will be included in the actual game.

Neat, great to see coordinated weapon ideas. Overall, I like the thematic, traits, and interactions introduced. But many of the mechanics/explanations are confusing especially from unupped to upped versions. Initial thoughts per weapon:
-Unupped Magic Wand: seems overly complex; worth simplifying so un/up mechanics are the same? maybe I need to see it in testing to understand the difference/benefit of the distinction
-Skeleton axe: looking forward to testing; not seeing what the initial strategies with bone golem are
-Scepter of ruling: I assume this can stack with sader or multiple scepters on board, each controlling 1 target as with beguile
-Great Maul: is the weapon strength the block Damage reduction (12/14)? explanation of modes is confusing.
-Infested log: new trait. neat. feel even stronger this needs simplification. all of the 'effects' are different and vary from unup to up. Is that necessary?
-Sunblade: ok, I think I get it. One risks mild damage to self while having mill/quanta denial benefits. mirages pump own thermal recoil. maybe we have a sadism version, heal from attacking mirages with plague while continuing to mill/deny. I wonder about balance for this: Whenever this card's controller self-targets or targets a non-Mirage card they control, change the target to this creature if able. Not only does that seem frustrating on top of milling/denial, but what does it mean 'if able'? When is it 'not able'? Even if Sunblade is destroyed, a single mirage on board could have that effect? Seems like a strong lasting effect to deny self-targeting with a single mirage on own board. Feel upped blade should have worse stats especially hp, keep it at 2 for easier cc removal when spammed on board. Wonder how fast mill by deck out can happen with sun blade, inno, burn, Shard brave.
-Fishing net: I like it. I understand it. Thank you.
-Bo staff: do multiple Bo staffs stack DR per staff copy in play?
-Fierce Feathers: I get it.
-Amber amulet: Jewelry. Cool. After fossilization happens, does the creature still retain original actives/passives? Or does it override and basically we have a clock golem mechanic.
-Possessed sword: not understanding the potential benefit/strategy of play.
-Cyberweapon: I get it.
-
Thank you for the feedback :-)
Some answers:
— The unupped Magic Wand came to be as a more "chaotic" version of what is now the upped Magic Wand. Testing will determine which is better.
— Great Maul completely blocks damage from the opposite attacker. E.g. if Great Maul is in your weapon slot (and you have a shield), it blocks the opponent's weapon, period. (Unless that weapon has momentum, not sure about psionic.)
— Infested Log is another case of "we'll see which version plays better".
— Mirages only redirect effects that can target them (i.e. that can target creatures, typically). They would not usually redirect a self-Deflag (a living weapon'd Mirage would, though). Note: I say this, but ultimately it depends on how serp implements the ability.
— Still on Mirages, the redirect ability belongs to the token, not to the Sun Blade. So it does not matter if the Sun Blade is still in play. We'll see if that's too strong; keep in mind they are meant to be detrimental (to their controller).
— Bo Staffs should stack.
— Amber Amulet should provide extra passives on top of the existing ones, but again it depends on how it's implemented.
— With Possessed Sword you can e.g. buff it and that buffs the Ghost too by the same amount.

Been a bit slow to start on putting these on test server
Went to try implement one a day & have it done in a week, but decided it's annoying enough figuring out the next code (tbf, I already have a script to grab this, but let's ignore that)
https://github.com/serprex/openEtG/commit/453cf30a968c64027a407b49dd1ed6b3184db1b7
So wrote this change to have cards be csv. Full circle from when card data was originally from a google spreadsheet. Switched to JSON since it was easier to process in browser (no need to parse csv in js compared to calling `JSON.parse`) but now card data is compiled to Rust during build phase so moved it back to csv which also allowed bringing openetg/legacy card data into same column ordering. Now I can easily add a couple lines to add a new card, but will have to get around to implementing card effects. Will probably start with some simple implementations that might not match text. Been a bit swamped lately & I had to swap out my keyboard since it was causing finger pain but now the old keyboard is on my linux box which I use for openetg development so that also makes me procrastinate more
-
wow it's been a month
struggling with split ergo keyboard transition, consequently causing me to fall behind in actual work, leaving little time for oetg
implemented about half the skills in dev branch. fudging things for ease of implementation. but will be traveling for https://2024.pgconf.dev in a couple days & won't be back until June 9th
-
Have fun at the conference!
-
hey now that I'm getting up to speed with split ergo wouldn't it be funny if I switched my keyboard layout to colemak? lol (https://www.keybr.com/profile/q4odl35)

https://github.com/serprex/openEtG/commit/09d5b713a4e7278f46f028032df505542f3f27f4
found time this weekend for fishing pole / possessed sword. taking some creative liberty in possessed sword implementation, feel like it'll need some ways to generate more haunted tokens
4 to go. Not sure how to go about implementing maul, hero/feathers will need some book keeping like steam machine, heatstroke is straightforward but will involve a bit of typing. Then to fix this stuff so it compiles
This session took a couple hours since I went with programming on my contra (trying layout with letters flush against sides, middle two columns a buffer to help space hands, using bottom middle 4 keys as thumb cluster) instead of the voyager which is what I've been using at work. At this point I have trouble typing with QWERTY too (muscle memory all messed up, but maybe it'd all come back after a few minutes) so it's pretty bad

Okay, here goes. One log and one cyberweapon. After I drew the cyberweapon I started worrying that perhaps it should be a ray gun instead, but since it doesn't have the 'ranged' tag, I figured this would be fine.
What? How dare I draw a cyberweapon traditionally rather than digitally!

Cyberweapon was psionic at one point until we decided it didn't need it. You were right either way.

My art contribution for the new entropy weapon "Magic Wand". Design is more contemporary and less dark magician . I hope it looks OK.

pimpollo: nice image overall, purple goes well with entropy pink, hand is nice. i find the wand itself oddly positioned and underwhelming - not necessarily a bad thing, but it takes a split second to register what I'm looking at. at first I see a 'white ball', it even looks like a microphone maybe. the 'interactive' part of the weapon (rabbits, bouquet, dove)...I wonder if that can be incorporated, but it gets more complicated for small space. I wonder if the image can evoke more 'magic'.

I'm tired of not being able to tell if my axe is antimattered or not, even though now that it's been nerfed it's less absolute value to be worried about. I was experimenting with backgrounds and ended up with two that I kinda like. Not sure which looks better, so here are both.

test note for unupped infested log. didn't do any extensive testing, capturing a few impressions. haven't explored upped.
Mono - generally worse than druidic/claw. mitosis doesn't trigger bug summon poison.
Not seeing any solid spiritual decks yet. Not seeing a solid life-death duo. Log seems to push decks to a ramp/heal (clock) style.
Would it help in a alphabond or shamanstall? Not sure.
Will take a look at lifesmith + spiritual soon.
Like Sopa, early draw dependent card. Can stack with multiple logs on board/saders, but those decks get clunky fast and still suffer from needing early draw + 3 or 4 copies in deck + quanta to play all the 'stuff'.
Ideas, missing cards are infested log
not good but idea is immo ferro draw

For unupped, cost feels better at 2. Card overall feels like it needs a boost or more versatility. Would it be problematic if log bonus triggered with any bug that enters play, including opponent? I originally thought it might do that and packed some nightmare in my deck to send chromatic butterfly to opponent.

i was trying amulet and i think unupped is really meh, upped has no reason to exist for pvp

037an057be047n2067q0057ri027q3057qi018pn
it takes no time to deckout your opponent, i did not even experimented with dials, adren works on both shamans or amulet, no pc so even mirror shield is almost an autolose and still really strong for the ability. Milling one own card isn't a huge deal if u mill 3 or 4 from your opponents. Around 4 or even 6 cards left in the deck, depending on your hand u can go for the kill by saving aw or adren
Shamans is the first card i thinked about but there are many more possibilities, shamans come in handy because u can bite amulet for cc or viceversa depending on your draw. Also for what i see, the mill on hit is not stopped by sancts while the ability is.

the more i use amulet the more it seem nearly broken and able to turn around matchups by simply playing accordingly, i got the win by decking out first (i had 2 cards left) and milled 4 cards with 2 activations, but the turn of AI started first, so i ended up winning
it has counterplay, if AI had eagle's eye for example i was not able to play so relaxed, and a real person can counter the ability by always playing all the cards but i still think the ability should cost another element
-
Would expect mill decks to win vs decks like FFQ/hope since a third of the deck is built around damage mitigation which is dead in the matchup beyond getting 1dr out
Was considering discard-1-draw-1, but want to give more time to get a feel for the power level. I agree it'll want to be reigned in eventually
anyways, shamanmill isn't new

Cards that are fine as they currently are, in my opinion:
Sun Blade - One of my favourite cards from the batch. Works well on its own as a beatstick-with-a-drawback, but truly shines (like the sun) if you take advantage of that drawback.

016u30677e067dp037ee027eb037dq027e9057qb0280r018pi

0f4te0358s055fr035ih045oi018ps
Infested Log - Simplified version of the original design. I like it. Great Spiritual synergy (hard disagree with Septima :-p), good at gradually taking over.

0g4tf0353b0252j035ck025c8015li035un018pk
Fishing Rod - It's a Golden Hourglass or a Clepsydra for aquatic creatures (and weapons). Provides a lot of stability. It's good.

0a4tg045030255r045i4045jm035if035iu018pi
Cyberweapon - Great at slowing down the opponent early, buying you time, terrible at actually locking them down. I like it.

067h4067n2047qb0880806814018pu
Cards that may need minor adjustments for balance, but that are otherwise fine:
Scythe - Replaces Possessed Sword, which had too limited uses. Good with CC and with creatures that die on their own.

066ts066u2046ua067t4047um047tk018pj
Scepter of Ruling - Strong and fun, another personal favourite. Might be in nerfable range, unfortunately.

0a55k06576035610456g0555l0262j018pu
Magic Wand - Significant departure from the original design. I find Time and Earth creatures work best with it due to having a good mix of rush and control. Also combines well with mutants / spider cows.

066ve046uo0677e027ee067ri067q1018pi
Skeleton Axe - Good finisher in a Skeleton swarm deck, I suppose. I actually like it better in non-skelly decks.

0852g085420452u0453d06537018pk

044vq014vo015060952g065420353d0352n0352r018pj
Cards that need significant changes IMO:
Amulet - Another modified design. I'm not entirely convinced by it, I think this is the kind of card that will always be either over- or underpowered and may never hit the sweet spot. I do like that it enables meme combos with GotP.

035lg0g5rg025sd035s2065ru018pq
Great Maul - Used to be too strong in rushes and got massively nerfed, ironically still much better in rushes than in defensive decks. For a supposedly defensive card, that hurts. Main problem IMO is that "defense mode" (with a shield equipped) is usually not worth the damage loss.

0e7780378q0677g047870377h018ps
No opinion / haven't played much with them: Bo Staff, Fierce Feathers
-
I might as well share the decks I've been using. Unupped decks tested against mages, upped against champions. New cards unnupped (even in upped decks) unless otherwise noted.

0353d0356g035fh035ut0162k086qq016qs016qr02780027ki027n20281q018pl
Blanks: 3 skeleton axe / 3 scepter of ruling / 1 cyberweapon (that probably should be pulled out}
This is a fun little mess. Once you get a scepter and an axe in play, beguile -> bonesharper -> reinforce one of your creatures, preferrably the vamp. The most hilarious match I had the AI PUed my vamp only for me to merge the copy back into the original, three turns in a row. The deck is vulnerable to hush, immaterial monsters, mill, and bad draws.

0655k065760456g045f9025ff035fq025fj015f6025oi0261p018pu
Blanks: scepter of ruling x 4
I'm not much of an immolation fan, but I had to try scepter+wicked, and this works. Scepter does most of the damage, so it's kinda slow. Weak against immaterial, mill, unstable gas. To do: upgrade and test vs champs.

064sd0855k055760256f0456g0156i01560037n2018pu
Scepter of Ruling x 4
The idea is to use chimera to keep your opponent's creatures on your side. Not sure why I put the regrades in, I think I have a regrade problem. Also flying weapon is mostly useless when your scepter gets glommed into the chimera. Still viable, though.

0552g055420152v0252i0353d0252l02606015um025un045ut065vd018pt
Blanks: skeleton axe x 3
Not beguiles for me to feel comfortable playing this. I try to beguile too aggressively and waste my spells on small creatures, I think.

0952g055420253c0353d0252l0352n055310252p0152r018pk
Blanks: skeleton axe x 3
It works, but I found it boring.

024tc054sh064vj014vs0158p035ck035ca045f1045od015ok015un01620018pn
Blanks: infested log x 3
My first attempt at a log deck. Pillarless. It only started working after the log got nerfed (phase recluse + nightshade + rejuv + bugburst was so overpowered it was hillarious). Maybe I should put in a flying weapon, so I can see if two logs makes double poison? Or mitosis?

024sd0352g025420452j02533055bs055de035ck045c8015c4015cv025ce018pk

077100572i027190471j0371b027bu037b4057au017n2018pn
log x3 - upped for the + version.
EpiLog is a good pun and an okay deck. But it has so many weaknesses. Maybe if I was smart enough to use self-plague, or include dry spell mycologist-style? This requires further study.

095f0055gi025fq015fu025f6045fc025f2025v1025v4025vg018pt

I was lurking when a fully-upped version of this deck was posted into the chat (and I forgot to make a note of whose work it was, either asdw or... whoever asdw was talking to). I haven't gotten enough of the new weapons to test up (other than log), so I downgraded the deck, added the regrades (to get the 2 def appreciation), and made a few other tweaks. Pretty nice mage farmer. I can't to ouei to save my life, but with the max health + unupped + deckout, this might be something to watch out for.

Okay, not my best deck name, but it burns through your opponent's cards like nobody's business. Regrade clepysdras for longer function, or to just get cards out of your hand so you can keep stealing the opponent's deck. Hard countered by pulvy, struggles against PC in general. Mist shield because I can play them all without 'wasting' the card.

The idea is, by reducing the cost of your creatures, you get 0: mitosis. But it takes too long to set up to ever be reliable, and one rewind will undo your hard work.
I remember making a fierce feathers deck, but I can't find it in my decklist and I don't remember if/how well it worked. I didn't notice the remade magic wand until I was looking through this thread, so I'll try exploring the new shazzam.

Missing cards are Scepter of Ruling. F.elf interacts with: butterly (the monarch type of course), Phantoms, Blobs, and scepter controlled targets (to reset on own board). Blobs can be applied to Butterfly for increased quanta production. I may be tired as hell as a parent, but I can still come up with creative decks and deck names. Decks play surprisingly well vs. Mages (so far) and seem balanced. Please note the scepter and Fallen monarch pun.

Missing cards are Magic Wand. Fun Decks. This is a great weapon, functions uniquely from other cards, very versatile, and much less confusing then the dove, rabbit version...lots to explore here. Entropy will always be fun. I like that wand can pair with 'peep' cards and disrupt heavy control or stall. Transform to common creature is right balance. This weapon looks ready to hit the streets. Magic wand x3
I have long been a fan of using regrade on micro spider cattle to 'reroll' a bad ability and get a stat boost in the process. Magic wand feels similar, with the added ability to reroll draws and being on a stick in exchange for a higher cost and an inability to target immaterial. Shazzam on a spider cow keeps bug and mutant tags, but shazzaming a non-cow into a cow does not give it mutant. Also, shazzaming a magic wand in hand into a monster gives that monster psionic. Haven't tested whether shazamming a cow in hand into another monster keeps mutant on play or not, but worth investigating. This deck could use more quanta.

Similar to the classic mut-an-egg, except using shazzam instead of mutate to get dejas, scarabs, hognoses, and ghosts of the past. A nice rush. Extra cards can also be zapped into miscelaneous goodies.

There have been a few times when feather-throwing has earned me a win, but I'm not convinced that fierce feathers are more valuable than owl's eye in this. Mages don't have/use that many shields where feathering will make a huge difference.

I'm not much of a user of mono air in general, so I went to standard (non-test) oEtG and played exactly this but with short bows instead of feathers and felt that I was doing just as well with a cheaper, equal damage weapon.

Conclusion: feathers need some help. Unless someone has a feathery doom deck that I haven't come up with yet?
I agree and I barely tested it. In fact, I found it boring and not incentivized to test. But not every card needs to be cool or versatile at the same point. Some shallow thinking here (since I didn't put in the design thinking as others did) but it seems redundant with SoFree. I'd be curious to see if it could incentivize off-element airborne synergies.
Perhaps this is not the time to introduce full on new ideas but I'm intrigued by the concepts of haze or vacuum for an :air weapon. Haze might have 'obscure playing field' effects either vision (like cloak or partial field cloak) or an AOE like flood that impacts creatures. Vacuum can be seen as 'sucking out of air' but also in the ecology sense of 'removing animals from the environment'. Say an effect such as limiting number of copies of a creature on the board, more than that and they die upon entry. For the sucking effect, perhaps quanta denial of some sort. Or the opponent's non-air quanta is partially distributed to their air element when weapon does damage. For Ecology effect, perhaps a limit of 3 copies of a creature on each playing field when weapon is in play. Example, own board you could only have 3 damsels, 3 wyrms, etc.; it's a mild counter to mitosis/fractal/wide creatures like wolves.

Fierce Feathers - The damage calculation is confusing and possibly broken, and I wish there was something else to do with it than dump all your "feathers" at once. Also I agree the card is kind of bad when just slotted into a generic wind rush.

sometimes does not start at all, sometimes can easily reach 50 damages in a turn and outrush champions. Seraph over dragon because is a lot easier to play, log probably does not add nothing than use fractix

0d808048140480l0580d0480i018pr
so far the best deck for winrate against champions and arena 1, very solid for farming both
chain dims while using fractal and playing psions is very easy, decent speed, after a while dims cost 1 :aether or 0 :chroma, psions 3 :aether
even with cyberweapon is still a psiontal and autolose against heavy pc/reflective shields/titan decks but it make it x10 effective. I used psiontal for farming with my alt and is ok for mages, decent against champions, like 40% winrate. With cyberweapon for now the winrate is a lot higher, like 60-70%

Problem I have with cyberweapon is what it does to opponent upon hit and that effect stacks over time. I'm thinking it should inflate opponent cost then reset next turn vs. stack.

Great Maul testing notes:
Card active - removes opponent shield stacks in entirety, moves stack to hand, opponent can replay entire stack at cost of one shield stack (i.e. stack of 8 repulsors moved to hand can re-enter shield slot next turn at 6 gravity cost - not 48). That's a pretty powerful active on top of moving single shields back to hand. Thematically, I don't like that the 'great maul' that conjures a big hammer would have an active that 'moves something intact'. Great Maul conjures something more 'destructive' in my mind.
1/2 damage (while own shield equipped)- just odd, prefer something more thematic and simpler to understand be instituted
Blocking damage (while own shield eqipped) - practically okay, good game mechanice, but thematically odd with 'Great Maul'. I'd want a weapon concept that, itself, is more shield like in look and function. More on that below in concepts.
Serprex said they're considering a shield 'merge' concept. Here's a few ideas for the discussion:
1. Weapon that has active: Splinter/merge/alloy. Rather than physical splinter, a 'psychic' splinter - active that steals opponent's 'skill' or 'trait' ---basically, their passive trait. Examples: Skull loses 'chance to turn creature to skeleton'; solar loses 'generate light when attacked'; phase loses 'block all physical damage. Once trait/passive is 'splintered' that passive merges to one's current shield in shield slot. Damage reduction (DR), which is more 'physical' is left alone on both sides. Example: own solar shield + splinter opponent phase = solar stats remain, generate light, block physical damage for 2-3 turns. Imagine splinter effect as stacking - clunky and dependent on opponent running multiple shield types (unlikely) or they can simply not play shields as soft counter. Super shield can be built, but difficult to do so. I understand the soft counter itself diminishes active's effectiveness, but complements can be explored: give shield. Example: Give thorn, active steal carapace trait, apply to own titanium shield = 2 DR shield with carapace trait = possibly worthwhile in a stall. Splintering might help expand stall decks, help explore slowing the game down for more 'absolute defense' style decks.
2. I've been thinking about weapons in general and companion cards that may deserve some synergistic design: lodestone, lifesmith, blacksmith, ferro golem. Can earth produce a weapon with a 'forge' or 'creation' style active? I present the concept of clay. Something that can be molded and applied to a 'copy' active. Can the weapon itself PU/mitosis a target weapon or Shield back to own hand? Can the active element be water? And, clay evokes 'golem' to me. Can the new earth weapon be clay-themed and 'golem' trait?
When applied to self, strategies like copy own phase shield can be looked at. Does the weapon itself have 'charges' and 'crumbles' after X usage? When applied to opponent's targets, what's the point of copying shields/weapons unless we're in some SNOVA/equalize build? We may not have the quanta to play or those shields are worse than the ones we're playing or don't provide help at all (i.e. opponent is playing Sh.of.voids with dusk mantle). I recognize the idea here is very problematic, but consider the 'clay' and 'forge' concepts in your own ways, perhaps you can move it forward in a better way.
3. Last idea: concept of 'umbrella'. A weapon that is sharp, pointed for offense, but, when the 'umbrella' is 'open' loses offense and becomes 'defensive' - even shield like. Can the 'umbrella' defense function by allowing two shield 'effects' to occur? Taking the great maul 'block' function, can the umbrella be easy to (a) replicate and (b) enter the board to (c) block various opponent targets? Block opponent weapon's damage when in weapon slot. Block opponent's opposite creature when on board? Here, I like Umbrella being earth with a life active. That can synergize with Lifesmith, Ferrogolem, Mitosis. I'll randomly throw out a build here:
Card name: Umbrella
Cost: 5 :earth/ 4 :earth
Stats: 7|4, 7|4
Active "Canopy": :life :life, stats change to 4|7 and block opposite target's damage; active can be toggled back to offense stats with 2 :life
This makes me wonder more about using 'repositioning' mechanics so that certain cards can be specifically placed in various creature slots. Maybe the right term is 'summon'?
4. Non-weapon design note, but pondering a buff: How about lodestone increases active costs for everything except weapon and golem actives?
-
Deployed some adjustments:
1. Scepter of Ruling active cost raised by 1 & stats changed from 7|5/8|5 to 4|8
2. Unupped infested log also gets infect(2), & 3 attack, while upped costs 2
3. Sun Blade cost raised to 3, Mirage is 3|6 instead of 2|8
4. Amulet active cost raised from 1/0 to 2/1
5. Haunt gets removed from creatures when they die (specifically tones down scythekitty)
6. Cyberweapon cannot target players
After some quick PVE testing:
Scepter of Ruling nerf, Infested Log buff, Scyther nerf, Cyberweapon nerf: No complaints here.
Sun Blade berf: Upped cost was deserved, not so sure about the new Mirage stats. It's becoming a good idea to just give the blade away, and I don't know how to feel about that.
Or perhaps it's the healing vs shield combined with the higher strength that's the problem. The deck below has a great matchup vs dim shields, wings etc.

Amulet nerf: People were using the skill? Just kidding. So far I have only been using the Amulet in mostly Time-based decks, so the extra skill cost has not mattered much. I also have not found much reason to "splash" the Amulet. Maybe the skill should be a different element altogether.

Give Sun Blade being a thing sounds great. Stalling with heals vs shield has lots of counterplay between letting shields expire or playing weapon or PC or CC milling such charitable gestures
(edit: lemming effect on mirage makes it hard to mix into givethermal, too bad, lemming effect seems a bit unnecessary at this point)

Sunblade mirage cost might need looking at, zero cost 3|6 target for fractal. 1 chroma cost?

tried bo staff: first attempt: rustler + life nymph but adren on bo makes instantly reset the counter
second attempt:

one delayed flying bo is enough to not lose the counter while the other flying bo attacks, one delayed bo and ALL get the counter. A new bo automatically enters with all the counters. Or at least, this is what i understood from my first matches with some missplays
Silence on creatures + immaterial + damage reduction is nasty

Testing notes:
:entropy Wand: great, no complaints, balanced, and looking forward to exploring it more.
:death Skeleton Axe: initially felt it was underwhelming and underpowered; then I learned axe active allows multiple casts per turn = game changer; need more exploration but satisfied for now
:gravity Scepter of ruling: always liked the beguile effect so this is a welcome addition; solid so far; should have named it Sceptima of ruling
:earth Great Maul: needs work, possibly wholesale new idea
:life Infested Log: even with latest buff, I anticipate it being underutilized; however, future buffs to companion cards might give log more utility down the road; when I slow down and think about it, it is odd that this is a weapon one 'wields' but bugs will always be weird
:fire SunBlade: interesting card that will need more pvp testing to confirm balance; token may need a cost; healing when blocked by shield is an interesting mechanic, just not sure of the thematic fit for the card itself, and within the element of fire
:water Fishing Rod: it looks cool but I sense it is narrow; active might actually be better at 2 cost; I like the token aspect of the design; this card didn't seem to draw much interest from testers so I wonder if there is room to refine it
:light Bo Staff: one of the best of the new weapon batch; like that another weapon will help aid stalls; this weapon can help shields
:air Fierce Feathers: unfortunately needs a new redesign; would love new off-element active and air getting even more versatile (I.e. quanta denial)
:time Amulet: versatile for mill or self-draw, worth testing to refine balance; recent batch of testing gets me thinking card cost now should go down 1.
:darkness Scythe: seems solid, good addition
:aether Cyberweapon: good addition, buff lodestone to inflate target card :)
Don't know what serprex/design team's window is for implementation but I'll keep messing with air and earth weapon ideas.

After nearly a year of development, we are ready to release these weapons to the main server. Also a new rare :earth spell Imbue is added which allows combining weapons/shields

Awesome new weapons and earth spell. Well done design team. Thanks to Niharia and Manuel for testing as well. Nice to see Tornado improved as PC and other developments (i.e. Firebrand active).
